Road Trip

On the way home from Texas we made a couple of stops...

this is the Driskill Hotel in Austin where we heard a pianist who looked like Willy Nelson play Beatles and Elton John Music

This is a bar called "Friends" where we saw a band called "The Altar Boyz"...blues that sounded like it was right out of Louisiana...great harmonica player

The next day we headed for Las Cruces, New Mexico...amazing local color and flavor and the nicest people! We loved the little village of Mesilla...

Chocolate Babycakes Baby!

Molten Chocolate Babycakes

December 14, 2005

Time: 25 Minutes

4 tablespoons soft unsalted butter, more for greasing dishes
12 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate (preferably with 70 percent cocoa solids)
4 large eggs
Salt
¾ cup superfine sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/3 cup flour.

1. Place a baking sheet on center rack in oven and heat oven to 400 degrees. Butter insides of six 6-ounce heatproof glass or ceramic baking dishes. (If using soufflé dishes, line bottoms with parchment paper; dishes with flared sides will not need lining.)

2. In a small saucepan over low heat or in a microwave oven, melt chocolate; set aside to cool slightly. In a medium bowl, beat eggs together with a pinch of salt until frothy; set aside. Using an electric mixer, cream together 4 tablespoons butter and the sugar. Gradually add egg mixture, then vanilla. Add flour and mix well. Add chocolate and blend until smooth.

3. Divide batter among six baking dishes and arrange them on baking sheet hot from the oven. Bake until firm and dry on surface, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove dishes from oven and immediately invert cakes onto small plates or shallow bowls. Serve hot.

Yield: 6 servings if you are on a diet, 2 servings if PMS or on a Christmas binge!

"Hot" Tip

Apparently Baby Boomers are aging in style with the latest trend, clothes made for hot flashes. At least 5 new brands have sprung up and show no signs of being just a "flash" in the pan. With names like "Hot Mama" who can resist? Making use of the latest technology in micro fibers and materials that are breathable and sweat-wicking these items are HOT!

Santa Claus is....whaaa?

I think the previous Santa-like posting is in no way what Santa really looks like. I offer, instead, this rare photo of young Saint Nick in training, as it were. I'm not quite sure about the big green paws, I think the future Ms Claus was not in the picture yet and, well you know them youngsters.

Madness About a Method-NY Times

This ignorance of science, flecked with outright hostility, is worth pondering at a moment when three of the nation's most contentious political issues - global warming, stem-cell research and the teaching of intelligent design - are scientific in character. One reason that has been cited for the dislike of science is that it is "irresistible" - that its influence tends to overwhelm and drive out competing values and authorities. But the Bush administration seems all too successful in resisting it. Time after time, critics say, the administration has manipulated and suppressed scientific findings for political reasons.

Tucson TG

I've been reading Kitchen Confidential and so this picture of the crew in action really makes me nervous. I don't believe there was ever fewer than 5 people in that kitchen, and there were no reports of lost limbs. I think the D&P Mals have the design for the ever expanding kitchen, and can extend it into the dining area. Looks like this could be dinner party central.

For all the madness it was a pretty good meal.

Winter in Texas

We are actually having our one week of winter early this year and it is not even supposed to get into the 40's today. Luckily I dry-cleaned my only sweater for just this occasion (we keep sweaters only as dust mite farms). In the mean time, hurricane zeta eta theta iota is spinning like mad somewhere. It's the Apocolypse I tell you, its in all the papers; plus there has been a image of the virgin in some chimichangas in Brownsville so that pretty much seals it.
We are gearing up for Mallen visitors, which means stocking up on red wine and Kashi. Looking forward to seeing the gang!!!
